enCompass: Inclusive Hospitality for Inclusive Cities
The 10th annual GPPN Conference, hosted by the Sciences Po School of Public Affairs, featured students' solution oriented ideas and prototypes to address public policy challenges identified by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To participate, each GPPN member school carefully selected up to five student teams to present their projects and compete for the GPPN prize. The result: 32 teams from around the world met in Paris to showcase their ideas on how to solve some of the most pressing global challenges of today.
To help those who have recently arrived integrate into the job market, enCompass (an NGO), will broker jobs from which they can grow, and in which their talent and additional value can be showcased: the hospitality business. Former refugees, as newcomers, know the city from a completely different perspective than locals do. They have had to adapt to the city and its culture as a newcomer, and therefore their experiences provide a unique view of the city; something they can share with guests as front desk staff. By staying in lodging that employs former refugees, travelers give back to their host country: not only do they financially help a newcomer, but they also help foster integration and inclusiveness.
Meet the team
Alexandra Khripko, born in Uzbekistan and raised in Canada, holds a Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management degree from Carleton University, with an exchange at Lyon III in France. She is currently completing her MPP at the Hertie School of Governance. Before moving to Berlin, Alexandra worked for Department of Justice Canada. She has interned with the GIZ in Ukraine and is currently working at the German Energy Agency (dena). Her policy interests include gender-related issues, development, and climate policy. When she’s not running around Berlin, Alexandra enjoys travelling, hiking and improving her culinary skills.
Corine Bos, Dutch, has completed her Bachelor’s degree at University College Utrecht with an exchange at the University of California, Santa Barbara, majoring in Human Geography, Political Science and Economics. Currently, she is a second-year MPP student at Hertie and studied at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy last semester. Corine has previously interned at a recruitment department and a management consulting firm. She has a broad range of interests, including social entrepreneurship, foreign policy and gender-related issues. When she’s not studying, Corine enjoys travelling around with fellow Hertians, getting involved a range of extracurricular activities, and singing along to Dutch rap.
Colette Beukman is half Dutch and half British, but has lived most of her life in the beautiful city of Amsterdam (while drinking black tea with milk and eating baked beans on toast whenever she can). Before starting her masters of International Affairs at the Hertie School of Governance, she spent a year living and working in Turkey, and set up a project to bridge the gap between supply and demand of renewable energy products in Northern Tanzania. Besides work and study she currently spends her time picking the fruits of living in Berlin.
