Smart Waste Management Program: Tackling Urbanization in Jakarta, Indonesia
The 10th annual GPPN Conference, hosted by the Sciences Po School of Public Affairs, featured students' solution oriented ideas and prototypes to address public policy challenges identified by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To participate, each GPPN member school carefully selected up to five student teams to present their projects and compete for the GPPN prize. The result: 32 teams from around the world met in Paris to showcase their ideas on how to solve some of the most pressing global challenges of today.
We propose a prototype for Jakarta to influence citizen behavior in waste management and develop a 360-degree model for plastic consumption, disposal, and recycling. It touches upon business case for integrated markets, is applicable to other municipal and household waste, and can be deployed across different cities. It will leverage public-private-academia partnership (PPAP) to identify and classify infrastructure development and application of ICT usage in waste management value chain. The model will apply mobile applications, enterprise private clouds, Internet of Things (IoT), Machine to Machine (M2M) communications, and Green ICT, to ensure harmonization of waste management policies and regulations.
Meet the team
Bee Shin is a Master student in Public Policy Candidate at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP), National University of Singapore. In LKYSPP, she is currently the student president of the senior class and VP-Student Convention in the Association for Public Affairs. As for her professional career, she is working in Corporate Affairs, Philip Morris Singapore, and was involved in numerous entities including Global Compact Network Singapore and the World Food Programme. She holds BA in International Studies from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Republic of Korea. Bee is interested in deriving innovative solutions that facilitate empowerment and effective implementation of policies.
Mijail Santos Luján is a Master student in Public Policy Candidate at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. He is a Research Assistant at the Asia Competitiveness Institute. He received a BA in Political Science from the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico and has work and volunteer experience at international NGO’s and different levels of the Mexican government. He previously worked at the Mexican Secretariat of Public Education, where he managed the conditional cash transfer programs aiming to prevent students at a high-school level from dropping out due to economic or social disadvantages. He is interested in social and economic development, and social entrepreneurship.
Sarthak Luthra is a second-year, Master student in Public Policy Scholar at LKYSPP. Previously, Sarthak worked in the FinTech industry, with FINO PayTech and ACCESS Development Services, and spearheaded projects on application of technology in financial service delivery and creating impact investment strategies. In Singapore, Sarthak worked as an Apprentice for IIX Asia, and National Council of Social Services. He is currently working with Microsoft Corporation, Government Affairs Strategy Unit. He holds a MSc. Economics and International Financial Economics from University of Warwick and a B.A. (Hons.) Economics from University of Delhi. Sarthak aspires to leverage his expertise to create high impact policy solutions across Health, Education, and Financial Technology.
